Sewing Essentials?

Since I'm new to sewing, I'm throwing this out there - what are your sewing essentials?  I am going to be doing craft and clothes sewing mostly - maybe throw in a curtain here and there.  Leave me a comment and tell me what I should have in my sewing room.

I'm going to see if my dad can make me something like this...

  1. Hmmm, sewing essentials? The only thing that comes to mind (other than a sewing machine - ha!) is a great pair of scissors that is dedicated for only fabric use because paper dulls scissor blades. A rotary cutting tool and mat are helpful as well. And a nice seam ripper, because you will be ripping out a lot of seams as you go along.

When I first started sewing I bought one of those starter kits at JoAnns, which came with thread, needles, scissors, etc. Once I figured out what I liked and didn't like, I slowly started replacing the kit with better quality items.

That sewing table looks fun but the only downside will be that you'll have to keep your sewing machine & fabric stashed somewhere else since it doesn't look like it will have much storage room when it's folded up. I've seen craft armoires (with doors and a sewing table that pulls out) on craigslist in the $100-$200 range.

Very excited for you, D! Maybe you'll motivate me to get cracking on some projects that I have queuing up.

  2. I'd add good lighting for your sewing space, multiple pin cushions (for needles and pins), markers, tape measure, good quality thread, and an old medicine container for your bent or broken pins and needles.
